What you gain with an Italian passport

Italian citizenship is not just a document. It is one of the most powerful passports in the world — and it passes to your children and grandchildren.

2025 Reform: Applications with a confirmed appointment before 27 March 2025 continue under the old rules. Check your eligibility → as anticipated by the Constitutional Court’s communiqué of 12 March 2026.

One passport, all of Europe and beyond

Italy is a member of the European Union. With an Italian passport you can live, work and study in all 27 EU member states, EEA countries and Switzerland — with full residence and work rights in each, from day one.

Live anywhere in Europe — no permit needed

Move to any EU member state, EEA country or Switzerland without applying for a residence permit. You register as a resident on arrival, with the same rights as a local citizen. No immigration queues, no sponsor, no time limit.

Work freely in Europe — no quotas, no sponsor

In most non-EU countries, working legally means navigating annual quotas, sponsorships and complex permit systems. EU citizenship eliminates all of this. Whether it is Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands or Scandinavia, you apply for the job — not for permission to accept it.

Visa-free access to 190 countries — including the USA

The Italian passport ranks in the world’s top 3 for visa-free access. Italians enter the USA via ESTA (approved online in minutes, valid 2 years), apply for the Australian WHV without national quota, and access Canada, Japan, UK and almost everywhere visa-free or visa on arrival.

Pass it on to your children

Once you are Italian, your children are Italian from birth — automatically, regardless of where they are born. The passport stays in your family for generations.

Study in Europe at local rates

EU universities charge European citizens the same fees as local students — often a fraction of international tuition. This applies to your children too.

Buy property in the EU without restrictions

EU citizens can purchase property in any member state on the same terms as nationals. No additional taxes, no foreign buyer restrictions.

Italy has advantages other EU countries don’t offer

The €100,000 flat tax

Italy offers new tax residents a flat tax of €100,000/year on all foreign-source income — regardless of how much is earned abroad. One of the most competitive tax regimes in Europe for those moving from outside the EU.

Quality of life

Italy consistently ranks among the best countries for food, healthcare, climate and cultural richness. For many families, the Italian passport is the starting point for an entirely different lifestyle.

You may already be Italian

If you have an Italian ancestor — a grandparent or a more distant ancestor with an application filed before 27 March 2025 — you may have automatically inherited Italian citizenship. You are not applying for it; you already have it. You just need to prove it.

You have an Italian ancestor

This is the starting point. The ancestor does not need to be recent — for applications filed before 27 March 2025, even great-grandparents and more distant ancestors count, provided the chain is unbroken. For new applications, automatic transmission applies only up to the grandchildren of an Italian-born citizen.

No one renounced it

Citizenship passes down as long as no ancestor voluntarily became a citizen of another country before the birth of their child.

The 2025 reform limits new applications

New applications are now limited to children and grandchildren of a citizen born in Italy. If your descent is more distant, check the Eligibility tab — you may still qualify under transitional provisions.
