Are you eligible? Let’s find out together

Italian citizenship by descent works differently from most immigration pathways. You do not apply for it — you prove you already have it. Here is what that means in practice.

2025 Reform: Applications with a confirmed appointment before 27 March 2025 continue under the old rules. Check your eligibility → as anticipated by the Constitutional Court’s communiqué of 12 March 2026.

Do you qualify for Italian citizenship? Find out in 2 questions

The rules changed in 2025. This checker gives you a first indication — it doesn't replace a consultation, but helps you understand where to start.

Who was Italian in your family?

Indicate the most distant person in your direct line.

How Italian citizenship is transmitted

If one of your ancestors was an Italian citizen, they automatically transmitted that citizenship to their child at birth. That child transmitted it to theirs, and so on — all the way down to you, provided no one ever renounced it.

What keeps the chain alive

Your ancestor was Italian when their child was born. That child was Italian when their child was born. Each generation transmits it automatically — no application, no ceremony, it simply happens at birth.

What breaks the chain

The only thing that interrupts transmission is if an ancestor voluntarily became a citizen of another country before the birth of their child, under a law that caused loss of Italian citizenship at the time. Emigrating, or simply living abroad, does not count.

What changed — and what did not

You applied before 27 March 2025

You are fully protected. Your application continues under the old rules — any generation, no new restrictions.

You are a child or grandchild of an Italian citizen born in Italy

The reform does not affect you. You qualify under both old and new rules.

You are third generation or further, applying after March 2025

For applications filed after 27 March 2025, automatic transmission no longer applies. There are no transitional provisions that allow exceptions: the two-generation limit is definitive, as anticipated by the Constitutional Court’s communiqué of 12 March 2026. If you had a confirmed appointment before that date, you are fully protected.

Not sure where you stand? The reform is complex and has exceptions. We have assessed hundreds of cases since March 2025. The honest answer is: you need a thorough assessment before assuming you do not qualify.

Two common misconceptions

“My ancestor emigrated, so I probably don’t qualify”

Emigration alone does not break the chain. Millions of Italians moved to Brazil, Argentina and the USA in the 19th and 20th centuries without ever renouncing citizenship. Their descendants can often still claim it today.

“My ancestor got an American passport, so the chain is broken”

Not necessarily. What matters is the exact date of naturalisation relative to the birth date of their child. If naturalisation happened after the child’s birth, the chain is intact. This is the most common misconception we encounter.
