Not just a renewal, a different legal status
The EU residence permit for long-term residents — established by Directive 2003/109/EC — is the highest level of protection Italy offers to those who are not yet citizens. Those who obtain it enter a legal category protected at European, not just Italian, level.
No renewal
The permit is indefinite. You no longer need to monitor expiry dates, gather documents every two years or risk interruptions from bureaucratic delays. Once obtained, it is yours.
EU mobility
With this permit you can reside and work in other EU countries for periods exceeding 3 months, without having to restart the entire process from scratch. It is the legal bridge between Italian residence and European freedom.
Equal access to work
Employed work, self-employment, freelance professions: the same rights as Italian citizens. No sector limits, no quotas, no Nulla Osta required every time you change employer.
Simplified family reunification
Long-term permit holders enjoy preferential conditions for family reunification: lower income requirements compared to ordinary permits and a simplified procedure for spouse and children.
Welfare access
Social benefits, family allowances, tax concessions, access to social housing waiting lists: all the same rights granted to Italian citizens, without discrimination.
Foundation for citizenship
Having the EU long-term permit consolidates your legal status and simplifies the path to naturalisation, if you decide to pursue it after 10 years of legal residence.
