Citizenship italiana per naturalizzazione

Quattro percorsi distinti verso la cittadinanza italiana per chi ha costruito la propria vita in Italia. The standard path requires 10 years of continuous legal residence — but marriage to an Italian citizen, birth in Italy and special circumstances each follow different rules.

Citizenship by descent (jure sanguinis) is a different route with different rules — covered in a separate dedicated guide →

Quale percorso si applica a te?

Percorso 1 — Residenza (10 anni)

After 10 years of continuous legal residence in Italy. The most common route for non-EU workers and their families. Certificato di lingua italiana B1 required. No Decreto Flussi quota involved — eligibility depends solely on your residence history.

Percorso 2 — Matrimonio (2 anni)

After 2 years of legal residence in Italy following marriage to an Italian citizen. 3 years if residing abroad. Halved to 1 year (or 18 months abroad) if the couple has children. Certificato di lingua italiana B1 required.

Percorso 3 — Nascita in Italia

Non-EU nationals born in Italy who have resided continuously and legally until age 18. Application must be filed within one year of turning 18 (i.e., before age 19). Language requirement waived. No residence gap tolerated.

Percorso 4 — Casi speciali

Recognised refugees and stateless persons: 5 years. EU citizens: 4 years. Former Italian citizens who renounced for political reasons: by declaration. Each category has specific rules — we assess your situation in the orientation call.

In sintesi

10 years residence

Continuous legal residence required for the standard route. A single gap in registration can reset the clock. We verify your history before committing to a filing date.

B1 Italian — required

Required for all routes except birth in Italy. Accepted certificates: CILS, PLIDA, CELI. An Italian university degree also satisfies the requirement.

12 – 24 months

Ministero dell'Interno processing time after submission. There is no official fast-track. A complete, well-organised dossier reduces the risk of requests for additional documents.

€ 250 government fee

Non-refundable stamp duty paid at the time of online application. Additional costs: apostilles, certified translations, B1 exam fee.
